On March 16, 2024, Weiss Lake located in Centre, AL, hosted a National Crappie League event. The Division I tournament faced heavy rains on the day before the tournament and chilly weather on the day of the tournament with overcast skies.

The Ohio-based husband and wife team of Doug & Renee Allen secured the first position by weighing 9.74 lbs with five fish, winning $3,400.00. They also won the tournament’s big fish award with a 2.42 lb crappie, earning $350.00, and secured $200.00 for being the top male/female team. Overall, they earned $3,950.00 for their weight.

The team began fishing upstream in the river, which was muddy due to the rain. They fished steak beds in the mud flats and kept moving down the channels. Their big fish was caught in 25 feet of water. They used 1/8oz jig head and monkey milk jigs for casting to the fish. Additionally, they used hair jigs tied by Doug’s brother. Although they had some long poles, the fish seemed spooked. Doug mentioned he wasn’t well-versed with the live scope and had been using it for about a year, but he was still learning.

Tony Thomas secured the second position by weighing 9.67 lbs, earning $1,600.00. He won $200.00 for being the top senior and $150.00 for the second big fish with a 1.94 lb crappie. Tony used jigs with minnows, but the fish would take the minnows, so he switched to a different jig with no tail and minnows to catch his fish. He fished from the dam to Yellow Creek, and although the first hour was slow, the bite was consistent throughout the day. He used 1/16 pink-colored jig heads.

Charles Bowman and Morgan Neal, the Lake Washington winners, secured the third position with a 9.65 lb. bag, earning $1,000.00. Dan and Sue Dannenmeuller, the top multi-pole team, earned $500.00. Steve Jeffers and Dwight Keller secured fourth place, earning $600.00, and Michael Pelsor & Wendell Heath secured fifth place, earning $500.00. The tournament paid out for the top 10 places, amounting to a total of $10,000.00.
