Steve Jeffers and Dwight Keller Win Carlyle

On May 4, 2024, the National Crappie League held a Division I tournament and national qualifier at Lake Carlyle in Carlyle, IL. Anglers from various regions competed for the top honor and national championship qualification, with the event being hosted by the City of Carlyle and Clinton County Tourism.

A beautiful warm sunny day awaited the anglers on competition day.  Steve Jeffers & Dwight Keller emerged as the winners with a total weight of 5.56 lbs. They caught a big fish weighing 1.39 lbs, which tied them with the 6th place team of Steve and Andrew Wright for big fish.

The first-place team fished in 8-12 foot waters in the Allen Branch area. They caught a few roaming fish, but most were caught out of brush piles. They used Sviler and Chartruesse hair jigs for bait. Jeffers and Keller won $2287.50.

Charles Bowman and Morgan Neal secured the second place with a weight of 5.53 lbs. The team earned $1100.00 for their finish. They initially were casting their lines without much success, but switched to vertical long pole fishing brush piles, using 14 ft Crappie Ax Maching Rods and an Ozark Rod. They were fishing in 15-18 foot waters on the Allen Branch.  The team earned $1100.00 for their position.

David Eldridge and Scott Gower came in third with a weight of 5.13 lbs, earning $700.00.  They fished in 10 to 15-foot waters and covered a lot of areas around the lake. They used Ozark & BnM poles with one-and-a-half-inch baby shad “Six Killer Baits” on a JB jighead.

Mitchells Budds and Derick Trout weighed in at 4.88 lbs, earning them fourth place. Doug and Renee Allen took fifth place with a weight of 4.86 lbs. They also were the top Male-Female team and received $200.00 for their achievement. The top multipole team was Dan & Sue Dannenmueller with 3.21 lbs, earning $200.00. Jeffrey Sharp took eighth place and won the top senior team prize worth $200.00.

In a display of sportsmanship and integrity, one team with one of the top weights disqualified themselves for starting to fish a few minutes before legal fishing time. NCL and the anglers commend them for their honesty and integrity.
